What is life like for Fulbrighters in the host country?
Applicants are expected to research their host country. Application materials should indicate a clear commitment to the host country community and a description of how you will engage with it.
Greece, often referred to as the cradle of Western civilization, offers a rich historical and cultural landscape. Situated at the crossroads of Europe and Asia and in proximity to North Africa and the Middle East, Greece’s history has been shaped by interactions with many civilizations. Today, it seamlessly blends tradition with modernity. As a member of the European Union, Greece plays a key role in the region and the Balkan Peninsula. The country continues to develop rapidly in industries such as communications and services and remains one of the world’s most sought-after travel destinations.
The Fulbright Student Program is a vital component of the Fulbright Foundation’s mission, bringing outstanding U.S. students from various disciplines to Greek institutions of higher learning, as well as state and private organizations. The program fosters cultural and educational exchange through scholarly collaboration and engagement.
The academic year in Greece typically runs from October through June, with breaks during the winter and spring holidays (approximately December 22–January 8 and around Greek Orthodox Easter). July is a quiet period, and most institutions close in August.
For research purposes, English is generally sufficient, though language proficiency should align with the project’s scope. Applicants should discuss specific language requirements with their host institution in advance. For daily life, a working knowledge of Greek is beneficial, particularly in smaller cities and towns.
Fulbright Greece offers extensive support to selected candidates, including guidance on administrative matters such as the visa process, as well as pre-departure and arrival information. Additionally, grantees have access to Foundation-sponsored activities, Fulbright alumni events, and other networking opportunities.
