Award Profile
The Fulbright University of Manchester Award covers the first year of a taught master's or research degree offered by the university (except the MBA programme).
Manchester was the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution and continues to play host to innovation and enterprise. Established in 1824, the origins of The University of Manchester are entwined with the history of the city and the region.
As the largest single-site university in the UK, with the biggest student community, The University of Manchester welcomes more international students than any other institution.
The University of Manchester is:
- Ranked 6th in the UK, and 34th in the world (2025 QS rankings)
- Ranked as having 93% of its research deemed 'world-leading' or 'internationally excellent' (Research Excellence Framework 2021)
- Currently home to three Nobel Prize winners with a total of 26 winners among current and former staff and students
Employability
We are the second most targeted university by the UK's top 100 recruiters, according to the High Fliers report on The Graduate Market in 2024.
Social responsibility
Our commitment to achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) is unmatched. We're the only university in the world to rank in the top ten for social and environmental impact in every year of the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings.
We're also ranked fourth in the UK, sixth in Europe, and ninth in the world by QS World University Rankings, for our environmental, social and governance impact.
An award-winning city
Manchester has been voted the top UK city to live in based on the 2022 The Economist's Global Liveability Index. The city has also been voted among the best cities in the world by Time Out (2022) readers.
A number of important firsts took place at The University of Manchester. These include:
- Ernest Rutherford created the first ever artificially induced nuclear reaction and, in turn, initiated the field of nuclear physics
- Arthur Lewis becoming Britain’s first black professor
- Christabel Pankhurst being first woman to graduate from the University in law
- Nobel Prize winners Andre Geim and Kostya Novoselov isolating graphene for the first time
Grant Length
Grant Period
Master's programs in the UK typically last a year. Unless otherwise stated, funding is provided for only the first year of the degree - although the grant period is 10 months, tuition waivers cover the entire first year and student visas are not impacted by grant length.
Stipend amounts are set and do not change based on length of the degree.
