Artist

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program welcomes applications in the creative and performing arts. Arts candidates for the U.S. Student Program should have relatively limited professional experience in the fields (typically 7 years or less) in which they are applying. Artists with more experience should consider applying for the Fulbright Scholar Program.

Creative & Performing Arts projects fall under the Study/Research grant category and are available in all countries where Study/Research grants are offered.

The academic calendar begins in late August and goes to May with a break between December and January. The summer session runs from June to early August. Most grantees choose to begin in the fall, but the start date is flexible. Grants may begin as early as August 2026. The last possible start date is March 31, 2027.

Orientation
Pre-Departure Orientation

As a condition of the grant, all grantees to the Dominican Republic are required to participate in the Pre-Departure Orientation that takes place typically in mid summer. The PDO is organized by IIE in collaboration with ECA , and is held in the U.S. (virtually or in-person).

  • Well-defined research project with support from ideal host institutions and a solid foundation in their subject areas.
  • Topics connected to Mission ICS goals are preferred.
  • Must have demonstrated ability to work independently.

What is life like for Fulbrighters in the host country?

Applicants are expected to research their host country. Application materials should indicate a clear commitment to the host country community and a description of how you will engage with it.

Fulbrighters typically get very involved and volunteer in their communities. Many enjoy teaching English and participating in cultural events. It is also important that Fulbrighters to the Dominican Republic be open-minded and feel comfortable dealing with potential bureaucracy within the host institution.

Foreign Language Evaluation (FLE) Form

If required, submission of the Foreign Language Evaluation (FLE) form is mandatory, even if you have advanced skills or are a native speaker of the language. Failure to submit the required FLE form may impact your eligibility.

Additional Information: Higher level proficiency may be necessary depending on the requirements of the proposed project. Applicants should discuss plans for language study between time of application and the commencement of the grant with the Language Self-Evaluation. A Foreign Language Evaluation by a college level Spanish language instructor is required.

Housing Arrangements

The U.S. Embassy in Santo Domingo recommends that grantees search for apartments using temporary housing reservation systems as these options allow for a shorter housing rental than typical leasing agreements of one year.  Fulbright alumni are a great resource for finding housing. 

Field of Study Restrictions

Students in Anthropology or Archaeology may need to arrange special research permits with their affiliations.

Visas

To enter the Dominican Republic and start your program, obtaining a Courtesy Visa is mandatory. To acquire this visa, you must visit the nearest Dominican Consulate in the U.S. and apply for a Multiple Entrance Courtesy Visa. Upon arrival in the country, you are required to contact the Migration Department and apply for residency within 30 days.

We will provide you with a support letter addressed to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which serves as our liaison with the Dominican Consulate and the Embassy. To process this letter, we will need the following details:
