If you are a U.S. citizen, will hold a bachelor’s degree by the award start date, and do not have a Ph.D. degree, then you are eligible to apply. Non-enrolled applicants should have relatively limited professional experience in the fields (typically 7 years or less) in which they are applying. Candidates with more experience should consider applying for the Fulbright Scholar Program.

Artist

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program welcomes applications in the creative and performing arts. Arts candidates for the U.S. Student Program should have relatively limited professional experience in the fields (typically 7 years or less) in which they are applying. Artists with more experience should consider applying for the Fulbright Scholar Program.

Creative & Performing Arts projects fall under the Study/Research grant category and are available in all countries where Study/Research grants are offered.

The Fulbright U.S. Student Study/Research Award is open to US citizens interested in pursuing postgraduate research for 10 months in Trinidad and Tobago.

The academic calendar begins in September, and most grantees choose to begin in the fall. though some arrive in August— the start date is flexible. The last possible start date is March 31, 2027.

Orientation
Pre-Departure and In-Country Orientation

As a condition of the grant, all grantees to Trinidad and Tobago must participate in the Pre-Departure Orientation (PDO), which takes place in early to mid-June. Organized by IIE and ECA, the PDO is held in the U.S. either virtually or in person.

Upon arrival, grantees will also participate in an in-country orientation and security briefing. Before traveling, grantees should consult the mission contact for guidance on selecting housing.

Grantees may enter Trinidad and Tobago without a visa using an official letter from the embassy, which grants a 90-day stay. Before this waiver expires, the embassy liaison will assist in scheduling an appointment with the TT Immigration office to apply for an extension. The extension fee is approximately $75 USD.

Candidate Profile

Candidates should be open to learning new cultures and adjusting to the challenges that may come with doing research in under-resourced communities and institutions. Candidates should be open to collaborating with the Embassy on community outreach projects to highlight the Fulbright Program while in country.

What is life like for Fulbrighters in the host country?

Applicants are expected to research their host country. Application materials should indicate a clear commitment to the host country community and a description of how you will engage with it.

Fulbrighters typically get very involved and volunteer in their communities. Many enjoy teaching English and participating in cultural events. It is also important that Fulbrighters to Trinidad and Tobago be open-minded and feel comfortable dealing with potential bureaucracy within the host institution.
